Genesis story

Could this be the greatest redemption story?

Mike Ovskey, the producer behind Unidentified Flying Objects, The Domain and various other solo projects,  is experiencing a non-linear journey to the top of the music industry. Initially he started out playing guitar around the age of 11 and he quickly mastered it. He completed his schooling and went to study music at University at just 14 years old but subsequently became homeless and never had the opportunity to complete his studies at the time, and also became the victim of extreme violence suffering a traumatic head injury that ultimately left him debilitated laying in bed waiting to die for several years. At some point in the midst of the convoluted series of life challenges and setbacks he had developed a great love of Hip Hop music and freestyle rap. Of course being homeless and on the road for long periods of time, having a guitar is not so practical.

In between working an impressively diverse array of minimum wage jobs all around Australia, trying to keep his severely damaged body alive, and somehow heal the injuries and the trauma, he managed to record some quality demos and toured the country performing as a Hip Hop artist.

He headlined iconic venues, performed at festivals, worked on records with Classic Hip Hop legends, saw success on nationwide radio, but never posted much on social media or showed any huge amount of interest in promoting his material and becoming famous. Unfortunately the health challenges put a crashing halt on things before they had any chance to blossom.

At some point in time during the slow and arduous convalescence and return to health, and after the complete obliteration of the Ego, he underwent a strange and mysterious series of events, which could most accurately be described as some sort of Spiritual initiation which in turn reflected in a creative rebirth, a musical renaissance, and heroic journey of experimentation in a rather large array of different genres.

Of course, production was always his love and always the backbone of his craft, and performing vocals secondary. His evolution away from Classic Hip Hop into various other genres and realms of experimentation has been superb. “The Domain” was his first solo production project, which saw endless amounts of experimentation, never really had any specific niche, was re-branded multiple times in different genres until it finally became designated as a project for Pop songs. The project has so far over 1 million streams, various behind the scenes dramas, has marked the rebirth of his touring career and received praise from the most revered industry tastemakers.

Since the lockdowns of Covid, he has developed world class mixing and mastering skills alongside his production prowess. There’s no outsourcing of engineering work (standard practice), no third party mixers or mastering work, literally everything is hands on from start to finish.

It’s a career that was deferred by a couple of decades of hardship and adversity. While other producers were at home with their parents and attending fancy recording colleges, Mike Ovskey was walking a very fine line between life and death, in the harsh Australian outback, sleeping in his car, doing construction labour, farm work, touring as a rapper, working late nights as a bartender, chronic pain, numerous medical complications, and squeezing in studio time. But after putting in the work, many hours honing every aspect of production and mixing, ultimately his vision is starting to come to life and blossoming into a beautiful body of work.
